Danville

Danville was established over 130 years ago by the Inman brothers, who bought 400 acres with their gold mine earnings and Danville's history has been one of change and growth ever since.

Often referred to as the “Heart of the San Ramon Valley”, Danville lies at the base of Mt. Diablo, and is situated between the towns of Alamo, Diablo and the San Ramon.

By 1860, word of the prosperity to be found in the San Ramon Valley spread east, which brought new residents to Danville and the surrounding valleys.  Most new residents were farmers and ranchers who recognized the value of the fertile land and the desirable climate, which boasts 300 days of sunshine each year.

In 1910, the San Ramon Valley School District was organized and San Ramon Valley High School was built in Danville.  Today, the Danville public schools are some of the best in the area.

The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad, in 1891, changed Danville dramatically.  It discontinued service in the mid 1970's and today the train depot is home to the Museum of the San Ramon Valley.  It also serves as the gateway to a new collection of boutique shops and has entrance to the beautiful Iron Horse Trail.  The trail extends from north Walnut Creek and travels south through surrounding towns and neighborhoods to the City of Dublin and provides a safe and scenic walking and biking trail through the San Ramon Valley.

In the mid 1960's, Interstate 680 was constructed right through the middle of this sleepy little town and it changed Danville forever.

Danville was also discovered by acclaimed western author Bret Harte and Pulitzer and Nobel Prize recipient, Eugene O'Neill.  O'Neill and his wife, Carlotta built their elegant and secluded Tao House on Westside Danville with breathtaking views of Mt. Diablo.  At Tao House, O'Neill wrote his final plays and his masterpiece, Long Day's Journey Into Night, and today it is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public for tour.

Danville has two country clubs, Crow Canyon Country Club, which features a clubhouse, golf course, tennis courts and seven swimming pools; and Blackhawk Country Club, which features two championship golf courses, two club houses and is home to the LPGA tournament.

At Danville's southern border lies the City of San Ramon, which includes Bishop Ranch Business Park and is home to AT&T, Chevron, Toyota Leasing and Parts, Gigatronics, just to name a few.  There is also University of California satellite campuses located within the City of San Ramon.

The community of Danville and its neighbors are proud of their excellent schools, churches, some of the finest dining in the East Bay, community theatre, sporting activities and the many other activities available.

Without a doubt, the residents of Danville are proud of their rich heritage, outstanding quality of life and picturesque surroundings.
